A Lifelong Passion for Teaching.
Alison L. Miller, MSN, PMH-BC, has spent her career at the intersection of psychiatric nursing and education. After earning her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Eastern Michigan University, she quickly discovered that teaching was not simply part of her work—it was one of the things she loved most and did best. Whether working with patients and families, mentoring nurses, teaching college students, or preparing experienced psychiatric RNs for board certification, Alison has always focused on making complex information clear, practical, and useful.
Her career in psychiatric nursing has taken her from direct patient care to nursing education, leadership, consultation, and professional development. She served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, including as a psychiatric nurse consultant at Fort Carson, and later held nursing education and behavioral-health leadership roles in civilian health care. She has also taught nursing students at the college level and educated practicing nurses throughout her career.
Over the years, Alison has written and delivered dozens of classes, workshops, seminars, and professional presentations for audiences ranging from small groups of nurses to large conference audiences. Her work as an educator has always centered on the same question: What does this nurse actually need to understand in order to use this information well? That approach eventually became the foundation of PMHRN.
Alison is also an experienced professional writer and the author of PMHRN’s board-certification review books and study materials. Her writing has been nationally recognized. But what matters most to her students is something much simpler: she knows how to explain difficult material in language nurses can understand and remember.
