If you’re an experienced psychiatric nurse looking to take the next big step in your career, you’ve probably got the ANCC’s Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Board Certification Exam on your radar. I’ve been there and I know how daunting it can feel. But with the right approach, you can master the PMH-BC exam and earn that coveted certification. Let’s dive into some practical tips and insights that will make your PMH test preparation smoother, smarter, and yes, even a little enjoyable.

Why Test Preparation Matters More Than You Think

You might be thinking, “I’ve been working in psychiatric nursing for years. I have seen it all. Do I really need to study that much?” The answer is a resounding yes. Experience is invaluable and will be of great help to you. But the PMH exam tests critical thinking skills and areas of psychiatric nursing that go beyond day-to-day practice.

Sure, it covers things like psychopharmacology, therapeutic communication, and DSM diagnoses--everything you'd expect. But it will also test you on topics you might not expect--things we don't encounter in our daily practice--like psychiatric legal issues, new neuromodulating therapies, and a thorough understanding of the five principles of ethical care, among others.

But to be fully prepared, you have to go beyond just learning the material. You have to build your skill as a critically thinking test-taker. Becoming familiar with the way ANCC writes its questions--figuring out exactly what it is the question is actually trying to test you on-- and how to methodically eliminate the answer options to reach the correct answer is crucial in passing this exam.

Top Three Tips for Passing the First Time

Here are my top three exam prep recommendations when gearing up to take ANCC's PMH Board Certification Exam

  • Study plan: It doesn't have to be rigid or precise. But having even a basic plan that breaks the material down into manageable chunks will ensure you don't miss a topic or underestimate how much time you'll need. (If you'd like my free12-week study plan, click here.)

  • Effective content review: You do not need to read multiple general psychiatric nursing textbooks for this exam. In fact, doing so will almost certainly mess you up, because those books will cover topics the exam does not test on...and not cover topics the test does test on. You need something that is PMH-BC exam prep-specific. There are several out there (although personally I would stay away from Mometrix, since it is a giant test prep company for all kinds of exams, like nail technician and real estate, and is not health care-oriented, much less psychiatric nursing. Their materials are poorly written, repetitive, and not exam specific.) Just make sure the matierals have been updated since the release of the new exam--September 2024. (All of my exam prep materials have been fully revised and updated for the new exam. I offer both an online course and books.)

  • Practice questions: My #1 top recommendation for passing this exam is to go through practice questions, even the same ones, over and over until you know the material in the test questions and the "rhythm" of these questions cold. But again, make absolutely sure they are written in the ANCC style and on topics specific to the exam. With AI now running so much of the educational show, there is a tremendous amount of schlock out there. Garbage questions that are only going to send you down the wrong path instead of being of help. Running through some random questions on Reddit or on one of these unaffiliated "test banks" is not only a waste of money. It's dangerous to your success. Be smart about it. Don't cut corners.

By committing to a solid prep routine and using high level prep materials, you’re setting yourself up for success.
